What Does 4x4 Mean on a Jeep?
Well, 4x4 is another term for 4-wheel drive, also known as 4WD. It's a drivetrain system designed to maximize on traction control and handling capability by sending torque to all four wheels simultaneously. This system is helpful in driving in off-road conditions or in rough weather, such as rain or snow. It can also improve towing capacity in many SUVs.
Also, 4x4 systems vary in type. In fact, Jeep has more than 10 different 4x4 systems, each of which are specifically designed for unique challenges.
Some are full-time, which sends power to all four wheels consistently and continuously. However, many of the Jeep 4x4 systems are also incredibly intuitive and can automatically adjust torque distribution based on your conditions and detected wheelslip.
Other Jeep 4x4 systems are part-time, which puts you in control of when you operate in 2-wheel drive and 4WD. Simply press a button and it'll switch between the two modes, even while you're still driving.
Many 4WD systems also includes a low mode. Driving in the low setting maximizes traction control when off-roading, while the high setting is ideal for slippery roadways.
