Family Promise of Monroe County: Voted Best Place to Give Back

What is Family Promise of Monroe County?

Family Promise works to house Monroe County's homeless.

Now in its' 11th year, Family Promise of Monroe County (FPMC) provides homelessness prevention assistance to at-risk families, shelter and meals when families lose their homes, and comprehensive case management and stabilization initiatives for families once they have been rehoused. FPMC is the only emergency shelter in the county exclusively providing housing and basic needs to low income homeless and at-risk children and their families. FPMC's shelter creates a soft-landing spot for the more than 40% of the homeless population in Monroe County, which consists of children and their families.

Last year, Family Promise assisted 114 families and 318 individuals with shelter and housing assistance, 64% were under the age of 17. Entering shelter is traumatic for children and their families and for this reason, Family Promise works to move them into independent housing quickly. Since 2008, Family Promise has transitioned over 99% of shelter families to independent housing and, on average, have done so in less than 70 days.

Family Promise looks to reduce obstacles for families from entering shelter. Last year, Family Promise launched its Pets with a Promise program in which Family Promise pays to board and care for a family's pet, while families are in shelter. This eliminates a family's need to decide whether to stay with their pet or enter shelter and families continue to visit their pets while in shelter. To diminish the trauma of entering shelter, Family Promise will transport students to the district in which they were enrolled prior to entering shelter, providing additional stability.

Family Promise is a social service organization, which partners with local congregations to provide housing and meals to children and their families. Family Promise is not a poverty program, rather a housing program. In addition, Family Promise provides transportation to family members without driving them to medical appointments, grocery shopping, jobs or job interviews.

Families receiving housing services from Family Promise continue receiving case management services for one year. As a result, 100% of families remain in independent living one year after leaving shelter.

"There are people who touched us throughout the program who will be in my thoughts and heart forever," said one Mom.
